Covering Soccer 103 with Grant Wahl

Guess which match? (Image Credit: Anthony Merced)

New York, NY - The first time I ever met Grant Wahl was inside of an elevator in Toronto, Canada. We were both heading to the MLS Cup 2010 Media Party. Basically, we introduced ourselves to each other and once our stop had arrived, we went our separate ways.

Had it not been for Borough Boys member, Christian L., I’m not sure if I would have ever met Grant. The 2010 MLS season was my first year of covering soccer. That season, I had covered the Red Bulls in their first season at Red Bull Arena.

At the conclusion of that MLS season, I had applied for credentials to cover the MLS Cup in Toronto. I was approved but I was undecided about going. So I did what anyone else would do, I asked my Facebook friends for advice. Out of all the responses I read, Christian’s made the most sense. He simply wrote, “Go.” And I did and since then, I’ve always thanked him for his encouragement.

Speaking of encouragement, thank you all for taking time to read this interview. As of right now, my interview with Grant has yet to enter the “Rocky” rounds. Don’t get me wrong, with all the MLS, NYCFC, RBNY and Cosmos news, I’m tempted to fast forward this interview so you can read our take regarding those topics.

It’s not going to happen. In the meantime, here’s the third part of my two-hour interview with Grant where we talk about his big break and the 1998 World Cup in France. Stay warm, grab yourself a cup of hot cocoa and enjoy!
